Toi et Moi, a self-catering guest house, is located in the picturesque town of Parys (already called the “The Pride of the Vaal” back in 1905) on the Vaal River, in the Northern Free State (a mere 120 km from Johannesburg). Flowing for over 1400 km, the Vaal River is the largest tributary of the Orange River and the third largest river in South Africa. Truly a majestic spectacle to behold, the Vaal also offers a myriad of activities which we will touch upon a little later.

Parys is the Afrikaans name for its counterpart in France and evokes the same feelings and emotions of romance and love, even a little flirtation. Monkey business and meteors
Toi et Moi is in close proximity to the Vredefort Dome UNESCO World Heritage Site which is the entire impact area of a meteorite that struck the earth here around 2 billion years ago and is well worth a visit, especially for bird lovers. Within the Vredefort Dome hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers can enjoy the majestic vistas of the KoedoeslaagteTrail Park on purpose-built trails. Paddlers, on the other hand, can enjoy meandering on the open waters or navigating between the myriad of islands.
For another exciting walk on the wild side, a visit to the Dell Cheetah Centre is a definite must, to see first-hand how their passionate and dedicated team work tirelessly to try and save these beautiful animals from extinction through education, breeding, and reintroduction. But, the wildlife may come to you. It is not uncommon for vervet monkeys to pay a visit to Toi et Moi too. They are wily, mischievous, and swift so we recommend keeping all windows closed at all times to prevent unwanted visitors who are extremely adept at recognizing the best produce in grocery bags.
Get the heart beating or go putting
But, all needn’t be candlelights and cuddles all the time. Parys offers numerous activities for those more adventurous: from white water river rafting and adrenaline-filled zip lining to sky diving, even a flip in a hot air balloon to ensure action-packed moments in-between the quieter times together.
Golfers are also not neglected (and neither should they neglect their partners for longer than a round) with a choice of two beautifully laid out courses. One is Vaal de Grace (the first Nick Price Signature Course in the country) and the other is the Parys Golf and Country Estate which sports pristine fairways which follow the river’s course.
Where art and culinary delights abound – Just like in Paris
Parys is renowned as an art and antique hub which is why many well-known artists have chosen to make the town their home. The best way to experience the art galleries, craft, and gift shops that Parys is famous for, is to take a stroll, hand in hand, down Breë and Water Street. You will also be spoiled for choice when it comes to culinary delights with 18 restaurants offering everything from local, traditional delights to scrumptious fine dining. Coffee shops and street cafés abound and are sometimes hidden in bookstores, one even on a bus. Another hidden gem is the Venterskroon Inn (formerly known as the “Old Imperial” which was built between 1860 and 1924. The Pub and restaurant provide scrumptious meals while kids can enjoy the pool and friendly Venterskroon Ponies.
On the first Saturday of every month, you can enjoy an eclectic visit to the Hartelus Mark which has everything from gourmet takeaways, preserves, and biltong to home décor items, jewelry, leather products, and even handmade knives. It’s certainly the place to shop till you drop. For another interesting excursion take in the exhibitions, entertainment, and equestrian and livestock shows at the Afridome Showground’s indoor arena. You may even try your hand at bidding for something special, for that special person in your life, at an Afridome Auction.
